The modern world can be a quite dirty place to be, plastic bottles, styrofoam containers, flip flops, wire and an untold amount of other trash that should not be found out in nature. In an attempt to try and clean up some of what's left behind, users of various social medias have started to clean up polluted areas.
Stories and "Before and After" pictures are being shared across social media. The "Trashtag Challenge" in particular is an initiative that has gone viral calling on teens to help clean up the mess humans have made over the years. Many young enthusiasts have caught on this campaign and are sweeping the globe.

I myself with other Cango Wildlife Volunteers from around the world took on this challenge in Oudtshoorn a small village in South-Africa.
The moment we arrived at the cleanup spot we did not know where to start, it left us speechless how much trash has been carelessly left behind. While scooping the area for the perfect starting point, we found all sorts of rubbish, such as condoms, diapers, batteries among other waste as glass and plastic. A dreadful smell led us to the most tragic discovery of the entire cleanup. A decomposing dog lying by himself between the trash, left us in tears. This animal, once a human beings best friend has probably been illegally dumped into the woods with zero respect for the dog, people passing by or the environment.

The more we cleaned and proudly filled our garbage bags, more and more bones of already decomposed animals and caresses found their way towards the daylight. Shook, anger, disgust and foremost many question-marks on how ignorant and careless mankind can be, the once fun work and light-headed challenge turned into hard work and a very sad moment to look back to. I wonder sometimes what goes on in these people's minds who simply leave their trash behind. How does their home look like? Are they that disgusting at home too? Thought after thought goes through my brain and I come to the solution that cleanliness simply has to be taught at home. It's the parents duty to tell their children that WE only have one planet and the WE need to take good care of it.
In total the team cleaned up 34 bags which is approximately 200kg in over three hours. We made a massive difference in one little spot, but the area needs many more cleanups to come in order to be spit and clean again.
The responsibility lies with ALL of us.

Why are you littering?
I am a jerk
I don't care
I am dumb
All of the above
